After stages one and two of the project were completed, President John Dramani Mahama officially opened the expanded Tema Port.

Meridian Port Services (MPS), APM Terminals, and other partners, notably the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority, have formed a historic public-private partnership.

According to President Mahama, the partnership demonstrates Ghana’s capacity to use private resources for national development. The expansion was privately funded.

The Tema port expansion project is “one of the most ambitious infrastructure developments in Africa’s maritime sector,” according to Mr. Mahama.

He pointed out that Ghana is establishing itself as the entry point to the maritime industry in West Africa.

“This project is more than a Ghanaian achievement. It is an African statement,” he continued.

Major shipping lines entering the Gulf of Guinea choose the Tema Port as their first-call facility due to its current capacity and sophisticated infrastructure.
