Professor Nana Aba Amfo’s historic election as Chair of the Commonwealth Universities Council is praised by Bagbin.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, congratulated Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, on her appointment as Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
In a congratulations letter to Prof. Amfo, the Speaker praised her promotion as a result of her exceptional leadership qualities and long-standing contributions to higher education governance.
“Your assumption of this high office bears testimony to your stellar leadership in higher education governance, and your enviable international credentials as a celebrated academic with more than two decades of experience,” Rt. Hon. Bagbin stated.
After being appointed as one of the eight members of the ACU Governing Council in August 2024, Prof. Amfo was elected Chair.
The Speaker claims that her subsequent promotion highlights her widespread recognition, demonstrated leadership, and wealth of academic expertise.
The Parliament of Ghana is proud of Prof. Amfo’s accomplishment, according to Rt. Hon. Bagbin, who described it as a major turning point for both the University of Ghana and the nation’s higher education system overall.
The Speaker said, “Parliament expresses full confidence in your ability to steer the Association of Commonwealth Universities Council’s affairs towards achieving its avowed aim of making higher education a powerful force for sustainable development and societal transformation.”
He offered Parliament’s solidarity and support to enable Prof. Amfo’s successful tenure as Council Chair.
Prof. Amfo’s elevation to the coveted position was officially announced by the ACU Head Office in London on January 8, 2026.
She is expected to give the Association, which represents institutions throughout the Commonwealth, strategic leadership and governance guidance in her new role.
