The recent flooding situation in parts of the country, resulting from the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, has become a national crisis. Unfortunately, the Pru East District has been neglected and overlooked in this context, with the Public Relations Officer of NADMO denying any knowledge of the district.
After the spillage of the Akosombo Dam, which caused widespread damage and devastation to homes, it was extensively covered by the media nationwide. However, it should be noted that prior to this, the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso had already experienced a spillage. As a result, communities along the Volta Lake, including Pru East District, have been affected by flooding. Approximately 20 Fisherfolk communities have been impacted, with 7 communities experiencing displacement and severe devastation. Media practitioners, political figures, individuals, and sympathizers have reported on and shared their thoughts regarding this situation.
Reports were submitted to the District NADMO, and visits were made to the affected communities. However, the people of Pru East District were shocked this morning when the national NADMO P.R.O., Mr. George Ayisi, stated on “Radio Gold” that he had no knowledge of the floodings in Pru East District along the Volta Lake. This comment contradicted the numerous engagements and reports that had taken place. It seems Mr. Ayisi overlooked the fact that the spillage of the Bagre Dam had already occurred, affecting the upstream areas.
This revelation deeply shocked Honorable Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, who had been actively advocating for relief support for his people. He questioned the coherence between the District NADMO officers and those at the regional and national levels. He raised concerns about the neglect and lack of communication between these different levels of coordination.
Until these issues are addressed, Hon. Boam can only conclude that the affected communities, particularly the Fisherfolks, in Pru East District have been neglected.
Below are videos and picture of the affected communities.
