Students lament about upcoming BECE as teachers’ strike begin

    GNPBy GNPJuly 5, 2022No Comments

The teachers’ strike has left students stranded and worried about academic work, especially ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Final year students have less than three months to complete the BECE.

A visit to some schools in the Sagnerigu Municipality and the Tamale metropolis in the Northern region, saw pupils idling without their teachers.

Some final-year pupils who spoke to Citi News called on the government to address the needs of the striking teachers to enable them to return to school early to prepare adequately for their examinations.

“If teachers are not here to teach us, how will we write our BECE? Next week, we will write our mock exam. If the teachers are not there, how are we supposed to write our mock?” one student asked.

The teacher unions are demanding a 20 percent cost of living allowance to cushion them from the rising cost of living in Ghana.

Students of Bimbilla Senior High School in Bimbilla in the Nanumba North Municipality in the Northern region made sympathised with the teachers when Citi News visited.

Final year students who were supposed to start their mock exams on Tuesday say they do not know their fate because of the strike.

Students from Bimbilla town and other nearby communities have since left campus, but the challenge now is with those who came from places far from Bimbilla.

The Headmaster of Bimbilla Senior High school, Barhama Adam, called on the government to listen to the concerns of teachers for teaching and learning to continue.

“It is more biting for our school because the form threes are writing their mock. This morning, a paper that was scheduled to be written has been called off because the teachers were not around to do the invigilation.”
