Sunyani High Court Issues Order Restricting Dormaa Paramount Chief’s Attendance at Berekum Chief’s Burial
A Sunyani High Court has issued an order preventing the Paramount Chief of Dormaa Transitional Area, Osagyefo Nana Agyeman Badu, from participating in the burial ceremonies of the late Paramount Chief of Berekum Traditional Area, Daasebre Dr. Amankona Diawuo II. The court’s decision comes in response to a petition filed by Osabarima Kyere Yeboah Darteh II of the Berekum Traditional Council.
Reports suggest that the injunction was sought due to concerns that Dormahene’s attendance at the burial, coinciding with the presence of Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II, could disrupt the peace in the region.
A published schedule by the Berekum Traditional Council indicated that Dormahene, the President, members of the Bono Regional and National Houses of Chiefs, and other notable figures were expected to attend the burial on Wednesday, November 22. This arrangement aimed to pave the way for Asantehene’s attendance on Thursday, November 23.
Traditionally, the Asantehene is the final dignitary to participate in the burial of a Berekumhene, as it falls within his jurisdiction to install a new chief after the burial.
However, the decision by Dormaahene to attend simultaneously with Otumfour led to legal action by the Berekum Traditional Council to avert potential clashes between the two traditional leaders.
To maintain peace in Berekum and its surroundings, the court has also called on the Ghana Police Service to support the Berekum Traditional Council in enforcing the injunction order.”
