Most of the foreigners living in Ghana, especially the Chinese migrants who work in the informal sector don’t pay taxes to the government.
Tax Foreign Nationals in the Informal Sector, Instead of Taxing Citizens with E-Levy.
There are 10,000 to 30,000 Chinese nationals in Ghana, according to a research conducted by a team of Ghanaian and Chinese Professors in 2021, including Professor Bokpin, Professor Yaro, Professor Teye, etc.
In 2019, one Chinese Lady was arrested for $313 million money laundering. If one Chinese national could make such an amount from Ghana, how much do we think the rest of the over 10,000 Chinese could make in total? Billions of dollars?
Please can somebody advice the Finance Minister to channel his energy into developing a strategy to widening the tax bracket to include taxing the informal sector workers and collecting right taxes from evaders, instead of the e-levy?
Ken Ofori Attah, please start wearing your Yale University thinking cap and apply your knowledge to benefit the country. The e-levy policy and its implementation will bring unprecedented hardship to the people.
Think through how you can come up with legitimate and appropriate taxation system to benefit everyone. Thank you.
