The prosecution’s case in the trial of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, over claims of illegal mining in Samreboi has been closed, according to Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai.
“This afternoon, our hardworking State Attorneys concluded the Republic’s case against Chairman Wontumi and his co-accused persons, Kwame Antwi, who is currently at large, and Akonta Mining Limited. We called four witnesses in total to present evidence.” Justice Sai wrote in a statement regarding the events on Facebook.
He clarified that the witnesses included a police investigator, a mining law specialist, a galamsey headman, and the headman’s boss.
“The evidence showed that individuals conducted mining on Wontumi’s concession without the necessary ministerial approval, contrary to the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019,” Justice Sai stated.
The action stems from claims that Wontumi and his business allowed others to mine on their Samreboi concession without official permission, including by aiding unauthorised activities and improperly allocating mineral rights.
The defendant entered a not guilty plea and was released on bond.
The defence plans to submit a “submission of no case,” claiming that the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case, according to Justice Sai.
“The lawyers have 14 days to make their submission. Our team will oppose it,” he stated.
