The Ghana cedi has closed 2025 with an unprecedented 32 per cent appreciation against the US dollar, marking the first annual gain in more than three decades and breaking a long-standing trend of persistent depreciation.
The historic turnaround coincides with the 60th anniversary of the cedi, which was introduced in 1965 to replace the British West African pound.
Data for 2025 shows the currency ending the year significantly stronger than its opening position in January, effectively ending a 30-year cycle of year-on-year depreciation against the dollar.
