The government has said that it will present an Alcohol Control Regulations Bill to Parliament in order to strengthen laws governing the nation’s marketing and promotion of alcoholic beverages.

The proposed legislation aims to protect public health, especially among young people, by limiting excessive exposure to alcohol promotions, according to Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, who spoke at a parliamentary leadership media briefing on Tuesday at Parliament House in Accra.

He clarified that the Food and Drugs Authority would present a measure that would establish precise rules for the marketing of alcoholic beverages, including prohibitions on sponsorships, broadcast schedules, and advertising campaigns that target vulnerable populations.

He stated, ‎“This initiative is not about stifling business, but about safeguarding the wellbeing of our citizens.”

Additionally, he said, the move would help prevent alcohol misuse and limit where and when alcohol can be used.

The bill will be presented to the House for discussion and deliberation in the upcoming weeks, according to the parliamentary leadership.

Stakeholders, including civil society organisations, health experts, and industry participants, are anticipated to be consulted throughout the legislative process.

The decision comes as health professionals and advocacy groups express growing concerns about rising alcohol consumption and its social and health effects.
