Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, has given cash donations to employees of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) 24-hour Sanitation Office in recognition of their selfless and persistent efforts to keep the city clean day and night.
Staff from all sixteen (16) departments attended the Assembly’s end-of-year gathering at the Mayor’s home, where the beneficiaries—truck drivers and excavator operators—were acknowledged.
Isaac Wagah, Eric Zigah, Eric Otoo, Michael Nunoo, Eric Boamah, George Essuman, David Apemeku, Sani Amani, Alidu Suraji, Desmond Essuman, Christian Atanyo, Richmond Aquaye, John Nkrumah, Blessed Esson, and Edem Zigah are among them.
Speaking at the ceremony, the mayor explained that although the amount was not what the workers deserved, it was aimed to reassure them that the Mayor was solidly behind them and that the donation was meant to show that leadership support must be backed by action.
He stated that it was the first time waste collectors under the 24-hour sanitation arrangement had received such formal recognition, and he expressed the hope that the gesture would inspire them to take more action to raise Accra’s level of cleanliness.
He praised the sanitation workers for giving up family time to work for the city, stating that he had personally moved about late at night and still encountered employees who were on duty, including at two in the morning.
He prayed for God’s blessings on them and their families and thanked them for their contributions during the year.
He warned that indiscipline would not be accepted, pointing out that some employees had committed misconduct by collecting money from people and allowing them to carry rubbish from other places to contribute to Accra’s waste stream, which he claimed increased volumes and workload.
He urged the employees to cease these actions, stating that higher wages and better welfare would necessitate more stringent regulations.
He said that the same authority that commended diligent employees could also fire those who disobeyed the rules.
The Mayor promised employees that those who consistently performed well would receive more support and revealed plans to increase employee motivation through an awards program.
Mr. Douglas N.K. Annoful, the AMA’s Coordinating Director, gave a brief speech in which he congratulated the Mayor for using his own finances rather than AMA funds to support the donation and called it a long-awaited milestone.
Noting that management was still keeping an eye on field activities, he asked the sanitation staff to uphold discipline.
