GH¢20,000 has been provided by Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey to help athletes who will compete for Ghana in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Shortly after presenting the King’s Baton Relay to gospel performer Empress Gifty at the AMA headquarters on Friday, after the baton’s tour throughout Accra, the mayor made the donation.

As part of events commemorating the relay’s journey through the capital, the Mayor accepted the King’s Baton from Mr Andrew Acheampong-Kyei (Esq.), Managing Director of GLICO General, and then handed it to famed gospel singer Empress Gifty.

He claimed that his choice was a component of Accra’s leadership role in national mobilisation.

“Everything starts from Accra,” Mayor Allotey said, emphasising that the support was intended to improve the Team’s readiness and involvement.

He called on businesses and well-meaning citizens to support the government’s and sports authorities’ initiatives by contributing to their operations.

The AMA would continue to work with the GOC and partners to mobilise public and private support for Team Ghana’s final build-up, he said, adding that the baton’s involvement in Accra was part of a larger national itinerary ahead of the 2026 Games.

Additional pledges were made for the donation, which came after the President of the GOC made an appeal during the ceremony. These included GH¢10,000 from Hon. Ashie Kotey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio; GH¢20,000 from the GLICO Managing Director; and GH¢20,000 from the Municipal Chief Executive and the MP for Korle Klottey, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie and Hon. Zenator Agyeman Rawlings. The total on-the-spot commitments increased to GH¢70,000.

The King’s Baton Relay, a long-standing Commonwealth custom of bringing nations together via athletics, continues to represent common ideals and global camaraderie, according to speakers at the event.

Ghana’s hosting of this relay leg, according to officials, demonstrates the nation’s commitment to building unity and developing the next generation of athletes.
