The University of Ghana is being urged by a coalition of student leaders to offer a convincing explanation for the sudden and substantial hikes in academic fees that were announced for the 2025–2026 academic year.
Humanities (Bachelor of Arts), Humanities (Administration/Law), and Post-First Degree Law programs are among the regular and fee-paying undergraduate programs that have seen upward revisions in the College of Humanities’ provisional schedules.
The authorised fees for normal Humanities students enrolling in Level 100 for the 2024–2025 academic year were GHS 2,064, with an extra GHS 255 for third-party expenses, for a total of GHS 2,319.
Levels 200, 300, and 400 continuing students paid GHS 1,519 in authorised fees plus GHS 255 in third-party charges, for a total of GHS 1,774.
However, when third-party fees are taken into account, Level 200 and 300 Humanities students who fall under a separate fee category spent up to GHS 2,383.
Level 100 Humanities applicants for 2024–2025 paid GHS 5,295 for full fee-paying students, while continuing students would pay GHS 4,750. Under the same timetable, students in levels 200 and 300 paid GHS 5,359.
Level 100 fee-paying students in the Humanities (Administration/Law) category paid GHS 6,378, including third-party fees.
Another wave of increases is indicated in the pricing schedule for 2025–2026.
Regular Humanities students at Level 100 will pay GHS 3,110, a significant increase from the previous year. Level 200, 300, and 400 continuing students will pay GHS 2,253, while Level 200 and 300 students who fall into different categories will pay GHS 3,174.
In 2025–2026, fee-paying Humanities students will pay GHS 6,086 for Level 100 entrants, GHS 5,229 for continuing students, and GHS 6,150 for Level 200 and 300 students.
The Administration/Law fee-paying programs show a similar growing trend, with Level 100 students paying GHS 7,169.
According to the breakdown, students must pay extra third-party fees, such as:
- SRC Hostel Development Levy – GHS 300
- 75th Anniversary Legacy Project – GHS 100
- SRC Welfare – GHS 50
- Reprographic Fees – GHS 5
- Telecel Data (optional for continuing students)
These fees increase the overall amount that students must pay.
Student leaders caution that households may be further burdened by the quick rise in tuition and additional fees.
The alliance also warns that if affordability issues are not resolved, students may experience further financial hardship, postponed registration, postponed coursework, or dropout threats.
