Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, a groundbreaking achievement that marks a new chapter in the nation’s political landscape. She earned her Bachelor’s degree and Diploma in Education at the University of Cape Coast before furthering her studies at York University in Canada, where she obtained a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature. In 2008, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made history as the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, where her leadership was marked by significant advancements in infrastructure and a strong focus on gender equity. Her transformative tenure at the university was followed by a shift into politics, where she served as Minister for Education from 2013 under President John Mahama’s administration. During her time as Minister, she championed reforms that included the elimination of makeshift schools, the construction of modern educational facilities, and the provision of free textbooks and school uniforms, all of which significantly advanced Ghana’s education system.
