On 25th and 26th September 2023, the Department of Social Welfare, Ghana under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection with support from UNICEF Ghana held a two-day workshop on the updated Probation Desk Manual for some selected Probation Officers in Ho, Volta Region.
The purpose of the training was to increase the knowledge and skills of the probation officers on the fresh instructions and guidance of the probation best practices.
The workshop also sought to build the capacity of probation officers on the probation desk manual and increase the number of trained probation officers at the community level in anticipation of the passage of the community service Act 2023.
It was also to enhance social services delivery at the national, regional and district levels.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Afisah Zakariah, in a brief remark through the Director for the Department of Social Welfare, Rev. Dr Comfort Asare reiterated that the Probation Desk Manual which serves as a valuable tool will help the officers carry out their duties professionally and effectively because it has all the laws and policies in it.
She charged the officers to impart the acquired knowledge on the manual to their colleagues at the office when they return.
On her part, the Volta Regional Social Welfare Director, Madam Stella Mawusi Mawutor advised the Officers not to relent on the challenges surrounding their field of work but rather use the limited resources available to yield good result.
A representative from UNICEF-Ghana, Madam Hilda Mensah encouraged the Probation officers to learn from each other’s experiences and expertise to enable them use the manual as a weapon in their field of work and also fight for the children and women in the society
Probation service is a statutory criminal justice service that supervises high-risk offenders released into the community. Social Welfare officers who defend children’s rights in court provide probation services in the country.
The Probation Officers of the Department of Social Welfare play a significant role in the criminal justice system by safeguarding children’s rights, assisting the police in locating the juveniles’ parents, guardians and relatives.
In all, about 60 probation officers from the southern sector which include; the Volta, Central, Western and Eastern Regions were trained on the probation desk manual.
Present at the training were, the Deputy Director, Unit Head Accra Probation Unit, Dr. Prince Boamah Abrah, the Deputy Director, Justice Administration, Mr. Joseph Attigah, and the Assistant Director, Justice Administration, Madam Vida Danquah.
