Death Of A Queen: Two Ghanaian Presidents Under Whose Tenure Queen Elizabeth II Visited Ghana
The queen of the Queen Elizabeth II and 14 other nations, Elizabeth II, has passed away. There were tidbits of information that suggested the queen was critically ill throughout the day. With the Royal House delaying in making the death announcement, many assumed that she may have passed away earlier than expected. The world is mourning with the United Kingdom now that Buckingham Palace has made its announcement.
Because she presided over the British Empire, of which Ghana was a part, until Ghana’s independence in 1957, the Queen is remembered with affection in Ghana. Even after Ghana gained her independence the Queen still played a major role in the running of the affairs of the country.
After Ghana gained its independence, the Queen is known to have made two significant trips there. The first was in November 1961, when Kwame Nkrumah was in charge, and the second was in November 1999, during the administration of the late Jerry John Rawlings.
Kwame Nkrumah and the Queen famously danced during the 1961 visit. The first visit, according to many, was made to persuade Nkrumah not to leave the Commonwealth. There were worries that Nkrumah was approaching the Soviet Union, and that needed to be prevented. During her visit, Queen Elizabeth spent several days persuading Nkrumah.
Again in November 1999, the Queen once again visited the country. This time the Queen was met by Jerry John Rawlings when she addressed Parliament. The 2 leaders discussed matter relating to how to grow the love between the UK and Ghana. It can be recalled that the Queen was even one of those who commiserated with the family of Rawlings when he passed on. According to the Queen, “I was saddened after hearing of the news of Rawlings’ demise. I recall fondly my visit to Ghana in 1999 and the many discussions we had at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings”.
The Queen passed on at age 96. Just days ago Liz Truss emerged as the new Prime Minister of the UK. Queen Elizabeth was the head of 56-nation strong Commonwealth and was the longest monarch of the UK.
