Two school staff members have been arrested for stealing students’ food supplies in Sefwi Bekwai, Western North Region.

Police have detained two people in connection with a plan to steal food products intended for students at the Sefwi Bekwai STEM Senior High School (SHS) in Awaso, Western North Region.

The couple, identified as Bennedicta Nyamadi, a matron, and Rahel Kyeremateng, a cook, were detained on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, following intelligence received by Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Sebastian Obeng, on the night of December 22.

Acting on the information, a joint team of police officers from the Western North Regional Police Command, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the region, Bright Asamoah Brefo, and MCE Obeng went to the home of suspect Rahel Kyeremateng in Sefwi Atronsu.

Large amounts of food products suspected of being stolen from the school were found during a check of the property.

According to police, preliminary investigations show that the suspects planned to take food products from the school food store and then keep them at suspect Rahel Kyeremateng’s home with the goal of selling them at a later date.

Twenty-one 50 kg bags of rice, four sacks of gari, two sacks of maize, one and a half bags of millet, one bag of sugar, three bags of beans, 40 large tins of tomato paste, four cartons of milk, six litres of cooking oil, and 54 tins of canned mackerel were retrieved. The entire value of the objects has yet to be determined.

According to police, suspect Bennedicta Nyamadi was arrested at the Sefwi Bekwai STEM SHS after suspect Rahel Kyeremateng identified Nyamadi as the source of the things during questioning.

Police say they are trying to find and apprehend Hannah Dufie, an assistant matron who is reportedly involved in the crime but is presently at large.
