Video of Ghanaian chiefs giving away massive gold to Queen Elizabeth II in 1961
There have been a series of flashbacks after the demise of the England Queen, Elizabeth II was announced yesterday.
Some old videos from the historic visit of the late Queen Elizabeth have popped up enlighting a lot of Ghanaians about what happened in the past.
The video which has gone viral and caught the attention of most Ghanaians saw some chiefs at Cape Coast (where Fante is spoken) lining up in turns to gift bars of gold to the Queen of England, her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and their children back in Britain when they visited Cape Coast in 1961.
The video which has gone viral was shared by British Pathe film, posted on YouTube on April 13, 2014. In the video, it would be seen that a grand durbar was organized by the chiefs and the people of Fantes to welcome the Queen and her husband to the former capital of the Gold Coast.
The British monarchy received a solid gold miniature palanquin, described as the principal gift from the Fante chiefs. The Duke of Edinburgh received a solid gold linguist’s staff beautifully crafted. Queen Elizabeth II received a miniature gold sword.
