The member of parliament for keta constituency Hon Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey has raised concerns on the opening of a canal at Kedzi – Havedzi to spill the Lagoon water into the sea.
According to him, not that community is against the partial reopening of the flood control gate but cutting of the sand bar at the beach and the spillage of the lagoon water into the sea.
Hon Gakpey was worried about the way and manner their Chiefs and people were not consulted and this is a gross of disrespect to our chiefs and citizens of Kedzi community.
There should be broader consultation and community engagement with the necessary stakeholders like the chiefs, Opinion Leaders and the citizens of the community but nothing of that sought was done.
According to him, he doesn’t see why something which some other countries have done and it work perfectly for and Ghana government is finding it difficult to do same here because reclamation of sea or lagoon land is possible.
The voltarians doesn’t need any resettlement but rather a lasting solutions like the reclamation of water lands through serious geographical survey.
Meanwhile the Assemblyman of Horvi Havedzi Electoral Area Hon Raphael Kwame Normegbor asked whether they made efforts to go to the community to educate them on the issues, and the response was a chicky answer that the people who need to be consulted were consulted.
“Another question was if there is an aftermath effect of the opening like what happened in the 1960s, what measures are being put in place to relocate the people. The response was plans are on paper which they cannot disclose to the public”he stressed.
How can the we gamble with the lives of the people of Kedzi if there is an aftermath effect of the opening of the flood control gate and the spillage into the sea who is to blame.
He observed that none of their chiefs from Kedzi community were invited but rather chiefs from Wego led by Togbi Dzokoto Tenge Gligui V Our question is not matter in such deliberations?
“From a reliable source available to us, the Keta Ports Director and Engine the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority have advised STRONGLY AGAIN removal of the sand bar at the beach but the authorities refused to listen to their advice” he emphasis.
According to him, one of the things that needs to be done to avert the flooding of homes in District is to ask Volta River Authority (VRA) to dredge the Ada Estua Estuary is silted to the extent that water cannot flow easily to the sea the is the Authorities responsible for the dredging of the Ada Estuary left to s their jobs and the authorities are trying to create another Estuary at H destroy the remaining land left for us?
“we are serving a strong warning to anyone who may try to canal into the sea at Havedzi (removal of the sand bar) but not the partial of the flood control structure to do the needful by having a proper co engagement with the chiefs, opinion leaders and citizens of Kedzi c otherwise, we will advise ourselves” he warned.
