We will not carry out the proposed new transport fares – Concerned Drivers
Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) in a joint press release with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) on May 15th, 2023 revealed a 10% deduction of lorry fares as a result of a marginal decrease of fuel and directed all transport unions and drivers to apply to new fares on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023 to help alleviate the hardship on passengers.
But the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana with membership across the country has rubbished the claims by GRTCC and emphatically stated that transport fares cannot be reduced.
Speaking in an interview with Mr. Paa Willie the National Chairman of the Said group on High Radio Breakfast show Dubbed High Morning Breeze chaired by Kwaku Mensah Abrampa, he noted that the decision taken by leaders of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council is to impound on them new lorry fares they are not prepared for citing the time and duration of their letter as very limited for the drivers to have enough time to contemplate on whether to accept the new price or not.

He remarked the conditions that necessitate lorry fare adjustment that it has to do with other factors rather than fuel prices alone indicating that prices of spare parts are as high as they can be imagined hence it will be difficult for drivers to break even when they consider only fuel price adjustment as means to reduce their fares.
He added that the current trend of fuel reduction cannot be the only indicator for the reduction of transport fares denoting that taxes are on high, road worth has increased, insurance of vehicles increased and prices of spare parts also high and so reducing fares will affect them hence government must reduce the taxes being imposed on dealers of spare parts and wait for another reduction of fuel prices before their fares can be reduced.
Paa Willie revealed that the content of the release signed by the leadership of GRTCC will be defiled and will continue with the already known fares adding that the general public will cooperate with them to ensure peaceful coexistence between drivers and passengers
