Speaking at a press conference ahead of the party’s primaries, the NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, said that the party has engaged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure the selection process is transparent and credible.
“Our internal elections remain our internal elections and it is the responsibility of the National Democratic Congress to establish ways and means of selecting our candidates which we’ll sponsor in the upcoming elections. It remains our responsibility and we cannot be taken over by anybody,” he said.
He added that the party will reserve the right to resort to its means of selecting candidates if the EC’s involvement becomes challenging or unavailable. The issue of the EC’s role in the primaries has been a subject of discussion at several meetings with the party in the past.

“We have taken a position before that if the internal party primaries are public elections, then the EC is under obligation to conduct these elections for the party free of charge without any charge to the political party.
Because if it is a state institution that has a constitutionally imposed duty to perform as far as our party is concerned, then why should they charge us? It subsides on the public purse, and it has been an issue before,” he stated.
This follows some uncertainties around the NDC’s upcoming primaries as an aspiring flagbearer of the party, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor called for an injunction of the party’s primaries. He however withdrew the case in the early hours of Friday, May 12.

Despite this, the party remains determined to hold credible and fair primaries that will produce competent candidates for the 2024 general elections. The primaries are set to go as planned and are scheduled to take place tomorrow, May 13, 2023. The party has urged all registered delegates to participate in the selection process.
