When it comes to Kim Kardashian, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the daring outfits (not to mention the controversial ones – Marilyn Monroe dress, we’re looking at you), the flawless beauty looks and the cute Pete Davidson moments, but the latest episode of The Kardashians reminded us of the more human side of the reality star.
In the latest episode of the Hulu reality series, Kim can be seen breaking down into tears as she speaks with death row inmate Brandon Bernard before his scheduled execution. The Skims founder, who has advocated for prison reform in recent years, cried as Bernard described the process of the execution: “First thing that they’ll do is put me in that chair and, you know, push me around, and I don’t want to be panicking and stuff so they have to give me some kind of shot.”
Hearing Kim’s tears, the inmate tries to comfort her, insisting, “you don’t gotta be sad.”
The scene then switches to a confessional narrative, where Kim tells viewers: “I was his last call… I couldn’t hold it in,” she says, as the footage shows her with her head in her hands.
She adds: “And fact that he was the one who tried to calm me down from crying broke my heart.”
In 2020, Kim took to Twitter to say that Brandon receiving the death penalty was “so shameful“. Brandon was convicted of murder in 1999 and died by lethal injection on 10 December 2020 at the age of 40.
Doing the confessional, Kim reflects on the call, saying: “He was executed. We weren’t able to stop it. But this is why I do what I do, because the system is so broken. The death penalty is so inhumane. I have to fight harder to make sure this doesn’t happen to someone else.”
Bernard was 40 when he was executed by lethal injection after he received the death penalty in 1999 for killing two youth ministers – Todd Bagley, 26, and Stacie Bagley, 28 – when he was 18. He was convicted alongside his accomplice Christopher Vialva, who was executed in September 2020.
Prior to his death, Kim had made a last minute plea to Donald Trump, who was president at the time, to stay his execution, after a judge denied a request to have it halted. She told fans via her Instagram stories at the time, that her conversation with Bernard was the “hardest call” she has ever had to make: “Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time. Hardest call I’ve ever had. Brandon, selfless as always, was focused on his family and making sure they are ok. He told me not to cry because our fight isn’t over. When he told me he’s claustrophobic and they offered to give him a shot of sedative to calm him down before they put him in the chair and he just didn’t want to panic, I literally lost it.”
She ended the story saying: “I had to mute my phone so he wouldn’t hear me cry like that, we didn’t say goodbye [because] we wanted to be hopeful that we would talk again. We said see you soon.”
And though she was unable to stop Bernard’s fate, Kim Kardashian continues to campaign for changes to the US justice system, visiting the White House in March 2020 with three women who were released from prison to further her campaign for prison reform in the United States and has previously discussed her concerns about long sentences given to first-time offenders and the disproportionate effect this has on ethnic communities.
Kim took to her stories after the episode aired to thank fans for watching and to say that she was so pleased to be able to share some of the reform work she is involved in: “Any time I can help share that there are so many transformed individuals that deserve second chances in this lifetime I want to share their stories with you.”
“Brandon Bernard deserved a second chance,” she wrote with a broken heart emoji. Continue reading…..
