The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced a significant milestone in the telecommunications industry, aiming to rectify market imbalances and enhance consumer choice.
This achievement comes through the introduction of technology neutrality for non-Significant Market Power (SMP) operators.
Under this new initiative, both Vodafone and AT&T have been granted authorization to re-farm their spectrum assignment in the 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 2100MHz bands for the provision of 4G services.
However, they will be required to pay an annual premium as part of this arrangement.
The implementation of technology neutrality is a strategic move by the NCA to address concerns related to Significant Market Power (SMP) operators.
By promoting a level playing field and encouraging competition, this measure is expected to yield several benefits for the sector and consumers alike.
One of the key advantages highlighted by the NCA is the opportunity for operators without existing 4G services to deploy this technology within their current spectrum assignment.
This development is expected to enhance their competitiveness and level the playing field with other operators.
Furthermore, non-SMP operators already offering 4G services will have the option to re-farm portions of their current spectrum assignment.
This will enable them to improve the quality and coverage of their 4G services, ensuring an enhanced consumer choice for high-speed connectivity.
By adopting technology neutrality, the NCA aims to stimulate investment in infrastructure and encourage the deployment of 4G networks by non-SMP operators.
This approach underscores the NCA’s commitment to fostering a competitive environment that facilitates investment, innovation, and technological advancements to benefit all stakeholders in the telecommunications sector.
With these measures in place, the NCA anticipates a more balanced and dynamic telecommunications landscape, characterized by increased competition, improved service quality, and expanded consumer options.
