Genesis 37:20-21 is quite an interesting story. In the story, Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him, but Reuben intervened to save his life. It reads “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” But “When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. ‘Let’s not take his life,’ he said.”

Two important lessons to learn. The brother’s of Joseph wanted to kill him because of a dream of authority he had. But this never happened.

His dream came to pass and his brothers eventually went to bow to him after all they did against him. Our dreams can be shattered especially when we do not keep them secret to ourselves.

The only dream that would remain immutable is the one from God placed on a man. Joseph’s dream wasn’t his. It was the plan of God revealed to him and that’s how come in spite of all that he went through, the dream of authority still came to pass.

We’ve all had dreams and ambitions that have either been abandoned or have been shattered.

But these may be our own dreams. I submit that the plan of God for humanity, revealed through dreams can never be shattered by the wicked machinations of man. We must let this be our source of hope and confidence all the time.

The second point is Reuben’s intervention that prevented Joseph from being killed. There are people who come around us like friends and brothers but they easily join those plotting against us.

They actually would fan and fund the plots and yet when they come close to us, they would pretend they know nothing about the plot. Dearly beloved, in the midst of our enemies plotting against us, God would raise a Reuben to dissuade them.

God would raise a powerful voice that would speak to object every negative and dangerous plot against us. This Reuben wouldn’t be our friend, in fact, he would be one of the enemies who would be used by God to thwart the efforts of the rest of the enemies again us.

Why? Because we carry God’s plan on our lives and until the plan comes to pass, Isaiah 54:17 says no weapon fashioned against us shall prosper. It means, there would be plots but because of a Reuben, nothing would happen.

May we be encouraged to stand firm by this word. Amen.
