Accra Circle Flooded After Torrential Rains Bring Monday Traffic to a Halt
Torrential rainfall that swept across Accra in the early hours of Monday left the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and surrounding communities heavily flooded, disrupting transport, delaying businesses, and leaving many commuters stranded.
Several sections of the busy interchange and adjoining roads were submerged after drains overflowed, making it difficult for vehicles to pass. Long queues of traffic formed on major roads leading into Circle as drivers searched for safer alternative routes.
Pedestrians were also affected, with many forced to wait for floodwaters to subside while others carefully navigated through waterlogged streets to reach their destinations. Commercial activities around the area slowed significantly as shop owners struggled to protect their goods from the rising water.

Emergency personnel were deployed to monitor the situation and assist motorists and residents trapped in flood-prone locations. Authorities advised the public to stay away from flooded roads and exercise caution as weather conditions remained unstable throughout the day.
Monday’s flooding has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of urban flooding in Accra, particularly around the Circle and Odawna corridor, where heavy rains frequently overwhelm drainage systems during the peak rainy season.
As floodwaters gradually recede, officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage, while residents continue to call for lasting solutions to prevent the recurring floods that disrupt daily life whenever intense rains hit the capital.
