Two people have died and four others are receiving treatment after a devastating head-on collision between a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease along the Elubo–Takoradi Highway.

The accident involved a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck with registration number GS 3789-24 and a Nigerian passenger bus bearing registration number AAA 449 YN (Lagos).

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at 11:53am on Friday, June 26. A rescue team from the Elubo Fire Station, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Clement Arthur and accompanied by Assistant Divisional Officer I Issifu Dauda Kaku, arrived at the scene six minutes later in a rescue vehicle.

When firefighters reached the crash site, they found six people trapped in the wreckage five occupants of the passenger bus and one occupant of the tipper truck. Three victims had already been rescued by members of the public before the emergency team arrived.

The fire officers successfully rescued the remaining trapped victims, administered emergency assistance, and transported four injured persons to the Elubo Government Hospital for medical treatment.

Sadly, the driver of the Nigerian passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene. The mate of the tipper truck also lost his life after being admitted to the hospital. The bodies of both deceased victims have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending further investigations.

Preliminary findings by the Ghana National Fire Service indicate that the passenger bus driver allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole, causing the vehicle to cross into the path of the oncoming tipper truck. The resulting impact led to the fatal head-on collision.

Authorities have commenced investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
