Police Arrest Suspect in Connection with Murder of University of Cape Coast Student

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old suspect, Michael Mensah, in connection with the murder of a University of Cape Coast (UCC) student, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

According to a statement from the Police Service, the suspect was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following intelligence-led operations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect, who reportedly claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave.

Police further disclosed that the suspect allegedly transported the victim to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her death.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
