Carlos Queiroz Resigns as Black Stars Coach After Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Exit
Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has officially stepped down as head coach of the Ghana national football team following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement came shortly after the Black Stars’ defeat to Colombia national football team in the knockout stage, ending Ghana’s campaign at the global tournament.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his Facebook page, Queiroz reflected on his time in charge of the Black Stars, saying football teaches that “you either win or you learn.”
The veteran coach said he was proud of the team’s achievements but admitted he had hoped for even greater success.
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination—it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” he wrote.
Queiroz stressed that the long-term success of Ghanaian football depends not only on performances on the field but also on building a strong structure to support players and the national team.
He thanked the leadership of the Ghana Football Association for giving him the opportunity to lead the Black Stars, while also expressing appreciation to his players, technical staff, and Ghanaian supporters.

Addressing the fans, Queiroz acknowledged the disappointment of falling short of their ultimate goal but insisted the team had restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s biggest stage.
“We cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage,” he stated.
He ended his farewell message with a hopeful note: “Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”
Queiroz’s resignation brings an end to his tenure with the Black Stars and leaves the Ghana Football Association searching for a new head coach ahead of the team’s upcoming international assignments.
