Minister Clarifies Government’s Declaration of July 10 and 11 as National Clean-Up Exercise Day
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), has clarified the government’s declaration of July 10 and 11, 2026, as National Environmental Clean-Up Exercise Days.
Addressing a press conference at the Ministry’s auditorium on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Minister explained that the briefing was intended to correct misconceptions surrounding the nationwide exercise.
He stated that President John Dramani Mahama has called on all Ghanaians to participate in a national environmental clean-up and desilting of drains and waterways on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day. He emphasized that the exercise should be undertaken before the resumption of regular daily activities.
According to the Minister, the nationwide exercise is being organized and coordinated by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
He outlined the schedule for the two-day exercise as follows:
– Friday, July 10: Government institutions, private institutions, security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will lead the clean-up activities.
– Saturday, July 11: Residents and local communities will spearhead the exercise with support from the security services, MMDAs, and waste management companies.
Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim assured the public that adequate logistics, including tractors, trailers, water tankers, and other equipment, have been mobilized to support the exercise nationwide.
He further directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to engage community leaders, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and various social groups to ensure broad participation and the success of the initiative.
The Minister also tasked the Regional Coordinating Councils, under the leadership of the Regional Ministers, with supervising the exercise in their respective regions, monitoring activities, and submitting reports to both the Ministry and the Presidency.
Additionally, all MMDCEs have been instructed to ensure that waste management service providers are adequately equipped and deployed at strategic locations within their jurisdictions to facilitate the effective collection and disposal of waste throughout the exercise.
